Today was a day where I had heaps of things to get done which took away from practice time, but still managed to fit some in, even if it wasn’t as productive as I hoped.
30 minutes Rose studies · Started on Rose 5, and listened to a recording before realising it might be too easy. Had a quick look at Rose 31 and listened to a recording of that too. More challenging due to 5 flats in the key signature.
1.5 hours tenor sax lesson · Spent a lot of time working on playing swung quavers with the metronome clicking on beats 2 and 4. I am so used to playing right on the beat, so need to learn to sit back a bit when playing jazz. With the quavers, the shorter one needs to have a bit more of an accent on it. Learnt how to play a dominant bebop scale and played this backward and forward in turns with my teacher. Want to start incorporating this into my own teaching. Played through all the excerpts, and I am in tune, and playing the right notes but just need to get used to the style so need to listen to more saxophone music. He gave me a list of musicians to listen to both for style, and for enjoying the saxophone more.
30 minutes Rose 31 · Got the go ahead for Rose 31. Learnt with the metronome, as well as listening to the recording a few times. A few awkward sections that need the alternate Eb key.
What I learned: Some days are going to be more frustrating than others, and life will get in the way. When this usually happens I don’t practice, so I am proud of myself for making this a priority. I need to listen to everything I was told on saxophone, and immerse myself in big band and jazz music for the next month.
